Upcoming Workshops, “Portraits and Dreams,” Teach Principles of Storied CDS Program

Two upcoming continuing education workshops teach instructors the principles of Literacy Through Photography (LTP), the famous CDS program created by photographer and teacher Wendy Ewald to encourage students to explore their world through photography. The workshop will be offered in May and again in August.

Through presentations, discussions, and hands-on activities, participants in Portraits and Dreams will learn how to link photography and writing in ways that increase their students’ critical thinking, self-expression, and personal involvement in school. Two writing and photography assignments will focus on the LTP themes of self, community, and dreams. Participants will learn about LTP’s collaboration with schools in Durham, North Carolina, and in Arusha, Tanzania, and plan a project to implement in their own classrooms.

Wednesday–Thursday, May 2–3, 9 a.m.–4 p.m.
A second, separate workshop will be offered Friday–Saturday, August 3–4, 9 a.m.–4 p.m
Center for Documentary Studies

Instructor Katie Hyde has been involved with the LTP program since she studied with Wendy Ewald in 1998. She directs the LTP DukeEngage program in Arusha, Tanzania, and travels nationally to teach LTP workshops at major museums, schools, and community organizations.
