The Center for Documentary Studies in partnership with the Southern Documentary Fund is re-launching the works-in-progress series Fresh Docs, featuring documentaries straight out of the editing suite. The idea is to watch these not-quite-finished films as a community, and then give constructive feedback to the filmmakers. First up will be Sharon Swanson and Rebecca Cerese’s latest film, Landscapes of the Heart, a personal glimpse into the life and work of acclaimed writer Elizabeth Spencer, now 91.
Friday, September 14, 7-9 p.m.

Spencer’s writings—The Light in the Piazza, The Voice at the Back Door, and The Southern Woman—encompass not only the geographical terrain of her Mississippi plantation roots, but also the emotional territory of a life in exile, from Italy to Canada to North Carolina.
