The Jazz Loft Project is a program of the Center for Documentary Studies devoted to preserving and cataloging the recordings and photographs made by legendary photographer W. Eugene Smith. From 1957 to 1965, Smith lived and worked in a New York loft building with an amazing list of visitors, including jazz musicians, filmmakers, writers, and artists. In photographs and audio recording–he wired the building like a recording studio–he documented an era, as well as rare moments with Thelonious Monk, Zoot Sims, Bill Evans, Norman Mailer, Salvador Dali, and many others.
