2012 CDS/Honickman First Book Prize Winner Gerard Gaskin

The CDS/Honickman First Book Prize in Photography is a prestigious biennial prize awarded by the Center for Documentary Studies and the Honickman Foundation. This video slideshow features an interview with the most recent First Book Prize winner, Gerard H. Gaskin, and images from his twenty-year project on the house ball scene. In the interview, Gaskin describes the project, the experience of winning the prize, and the process of working with designer Yolanda Cuomo, CDS’s Alexa Dilworth, and Duke University Press’s Nancy Hoagland to produce his book, Legendary: Inside the House Ballroom Scene.

First Book Prize in Photography co-collaborators include Duke University Press, and Duke’s Archive of Documentary Arts at the David M. Rubenstein Library.
