Center for Documentary Studies web design intern Hannah Colton recently created a video about The Long Road to Integration: The 1969 Allen Building Takeover, an archival exhibit researched and curated by 2012 Duke graduate and Certificate in Documentary Studies recipient Caitlin M. Johnson. Scroll down to view.

Caitlin began the work as her capstone certificate project at the Center for Documentary Studies, culminating in the Fall 2013 exhibit on the Duke campus. The Long Road to Integration chronicled a watershed event in Duke’s history—the occupation of the university’s Central Records Office in the Allen Building by the student Afro-American Society in protest of the racial climate on campus. The exhibit was part of “Celebrating the Past, Charting the Future: Commemorating 50 Years of Black Students at Duke,” a campus-wide retrospective marking the admission of the first black undergraduates in 1963. An opening reception in the Allen Building included remarks by Duke University President Richard Brodhead as well as Benjamin Reese, vice president of the university’s Office for Institutional Equity, and two former students involved in the takeover, Brenda E. Armstrong, a pediatrician and Duke Medical School’s associate dean for medical education and director of admissions, and William Turner, Jr., a professor at the Duke Divinity School.
