Literacy Through Photography Student Exhibit at the Durham Public Library, Through June 13

"Recipe for healthy living," by Nathan Jenkins. (See other recipes at literacythroughphotography.wordpress.com).

“Recipe for Healthy Living,” by Nathan Jenkins

An opening event on May 17 will celebrate photographs and writings by sixth- and seventh-grade students from the School for Creative Studies in Durham, North Carolina, that are now on view at the Durham County Library through June 13, 2014. More than seventy students worked with Duke University undergraduates in Literacy Through Photography, a class at the Center for Documentary Studies taught by Katie Hyde, to create their projects. (Scroll down for a slideshow of images.) The Literacy Through Photography (LTP) methodology challenges students to explore their world using photography.

Opening presentation and reception
Saturday, May 17, 3 p.m.
Durham County Library, Main Branch

300 N. Roxboro St., Durham, North Carolina

As both directors and subjects of their pictures, students deeply engage in the creative process. In the work on view in the exhibit, students brought their own vision into different lessons on injustice, literary characters, and creative entrepreneurship. A fourth project focused on habits for physical, mental, and emotional health; see the students’ recipes for healthy living in the Healthy Habits Cookbook (along with all of the other projects) on the LTP blog.
