When filmmaker Sharon Shattuck was in middle school, her father came out as a transgender woman and asked to be called Trisha. These changes not only added to Sharon and her sister’s adolescent embarrassment, but also placed a great strain on Sharon’s parents’ relationship. As a straight woman who had fallen in love with a man, could Sharon’s mom, Marcia, adjust to being married to a woman? But Marcia and Trisha stayed together and continued to raise Sharon and her sister as a family. Years later, Sharon returns home in the lead-up to her own wedding, looking to understand her parents’ enduring relationship, the evolution of Trisha, and the emotional impact of her father’s transition. The result is a personal story about love, commitment, family, and the thorny ambiguities of gender and sex.
