“We find ourselves at a moment when photo books are as important as ever, because they are concrete statements of artistic vision, essential counterweights in the ‘Ocean of Images’ that we swim through every day.” —Peter Barberie, 2016 First Book Prize judge

The Center for Documentary Studies and the Honickman Foundation are pleased to announce the opening of the eighth biennial First Book Prize in Photography competition on June 15, 2016. The deadline submission has been extended one week to September 22, 2016. Peter Barberie, the Brodsky Curator of Photographs at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, will be this year’s prize judge. Melissa Harris, editor-in-chief of the Aperture Foundation, will chair the selection committee that chooses the finalists.

Submissions for the 2016 CDS/Honickman First Book Prize in Photography will be accepted from June 15–September 22, 2016. For information on how to apply, and to view galleries of past winners: firstbookprizephoto.com.

The prestigious prize is open to North American photographers of any age who have never had a book-length publication and honors work that is visually compelling, that bears witness, and that has integrity of purpose. Winners receive a grant of $3,000, publication of a book of photography, inclusion in an online exhibition of prizewinners, and a solo exhibition at the Center for Documentary Studies; the photographs will then be placed in the Archive of Documentary Arts in Duke University’s Rubenstein Library.
