The Center for Documentary Studies is among the cosponsors for a Duke Performances artist residency at Duke University hosting The Civilians, the nation’s foremost investigative theater company. As part of the residency, Steve Cosson—the troupe’s artistic director—will talk artistic process with undergraduates in Documentary Studies and Theater Studies during an open forum on Friday, September 30, that is free and open to the public. The conversation, moderated by director Jules Odendahl-James, will cover the evolution of The Civilians and their research methods for creating new work and delve into the ethical questions around the creation of documentary theater.

The Civilians will also give four performances of The Undertakinga creatively staged investigation of death written and directed by Cosson that uses transcripts of conversations with shamans, morticians, philosophers, and mystics as the script; September 29–30 and October 1.
