An exhibition reception and gallery talk with Lourdes Delgado will take place on April 28, 6–9 p.m., at the Center for Documentary Studies at Duke University.
In Jazz in New York, Spanish photographer Lourdes Delgado documents in spectacular detail the lives and personalities of contemporary New York jazz musicians. Exploring jazz from a social, economic, and cultural viewpoint, Delgado photographs the artists in their homes not only to capture the spaces they inhabit but to present an alternative, less familiar representation of professional jazz musicians. The show celebrates this vibrant community and features such musicians as Kenny Barron, David Sanborn, Jeff Ballard, Stanley Crouch, Robert Glasper, Butch Morris, Christian McBride, and Ingrid Jensen.

I think there is something very intimate about seeing an artist in his or her natural space. There is a combination of voyeurism and adventure that really illustrates how their mind works. I think the space where someone can be creative is very reflective of the work itself, which makes Lourdes Delgado’s photographs all the the more interesting.
