“Travels with Mike” CDS Radio Documentary Featured on PRX, Airing Nationwide

Audio producer John Biewen with a bust of American author John Steinbeck

A half-century after John Steinbeck drove the country with his dog Charley and wrote his well-known account of the journey, producer and CDS audio program director John Biewen visited some key locations on Steinbeck’s itinerary, traveling not with a dog but with a microphone—mike, that is. In each location, he collaborated with an artist who lives and works in that place. Travels with Mike comprises a series of conversations, across time, between a great American writer and a diverse array of contemporary artists—conversations about place and the spirit of the country.

The full series includes episodes in Sag Harbor, New York; New Orleans; Fargo, North Dakota; Spokane, Washington; Orick, California, and Monterey, California.

Travels with Mike aired internationally January 17–21, 2011, on the BBC’s The Strand. The series also aired on PRI’s Studio 360, in February and March 2011. Now, a special one-hour program, hosted by Al Letson of State of the Re:Union, is debuting on the Public Radio Exchange (PRX), an online marketplace for distribution, review, and licensing of public radio programming.

Early in its distribution, the one-hour special has been picked up by stations in Boston; Chicago; Seattle; Minneapolis; Eugene, Oregon; Bloomington, Indiana; Austin, Texas; and Durham and Chapel Hill, North Carolina; and radio networks in Vermont, Montana, Wyoming, Louisiana, Arkansas, and east Texas.

WUNC (91.5 FM) will air the one-hour Travels with Mike special on Memorial Day, May 30, at noon.
